How Do Blogs and Websites Make Money Online?

Best Ways to make money online

Thanks to the internet there’s now a wide assortment of ways to make money online.

So if you are stuck in a dead-end job and would like to change your life around then this guide will provide actionable strategies to enable you to do so. Whether you are looking for ways to make a bit of extra money, a part-time job or want to create a full-time income stream, there are plenty of opportunities to do so, all online and from the comfort of your own home.

1. Job Board

This idea is rather similar but the polar opposite of creating a directory on your site. Job Boards can be an extremely useful source of site revenue where in the person who posts the job pays a monthly fee for his or her job posting.

Pro Blogger is an excellent example of a site with a very profitable job board system. When I checked out their job board, they had about 30 job openings advertised on 4 different pages, which means about 120 job postings.

That translates to roughly $6000 revenue per month.

You can start your own job board as soon as possible, Yinkis can design a professional job board website.

  • Generating revenue with directories and job boards is a really smart idea because you have very little work and you get a lot of revenue.

Both methods involve significant web development work to start off but subsequently it requires very little effort for its upkeep.

2. Offer Sponsored Reviews

Websites with reasonable clout and domain authority often receive requests from small businesses to post reviews of their new products. Yo

u can offer sponsored reviews for a fee.

While it’s okay to publish content as part of a sponsored review, you should never offer your opinion for sale.

Sponsored reviews really bring in a good amount of cash for relatively little work.

  • Sponsored reviews are a great way to make money! But please add a sponsored review disclosure whenever possible, sometimes sponsors make request that you not reveal that it is a sponsored review. Personally, I feel you should provide a dispassionate review with a disclosure.

Even if you do not disclose sponsored reviews, most websites will have a sponsored review section. This will indicate to your reader that you do write sponsored reviews. If you do not disclose sponsored reviews, may be a few of your readers may get upset. But I guess they really can not complain much about it, if you are honest in your product reviews.

3. Sell Advertising Space

The most popular way to make money from a website is by placing ads on it. We all know what ads look like, but did you know that they function in many different ways such as Pay Per Click, Pay Per 1000 Views or Pay Per Time Frame.

The biggest downside of website advertising, is that most people know what they look like and avoid clicking them.

When selling advertising, you typically have two choices:

  1. Find and work with advertisers yourself or
  1. Work with a middle man who takes a cut for bringing you advertisers.

It all depends on you. Is this a business for you or is this just an opportunity to make a bit more money?

I always lean towards finding advertisers myself. In my experience you get paid more, build better partnerships and can do a better job for them.

Advertising sales makes up only a small portion of my earnings but it’s nice to know that money is almost guaranteed to come in every month.

Be warned, Google does not like the practice of buying and selling text links. People buy text links because Google rank sites better based on quantity and quality of links.

When you link to someone, you are telling search engines that you trust this site and you are giving them some of your authority. Google likes this to happen organically.

So when you buy/sell links and get caught, Google will punish you by slapping your site down in the rankings.

  • Often guaranteed income.
  • Little effort to monetize.
  • Saves you a lot of time.
  • Great way to connect with others in your industry.

Takes away from user experience. If you set a set price per month, you can’t make any more even if you double your traffic.

Advertisers come and go, you have to spend time editing, adding, deleting and finding more advertisers.

4. Selling Services

Selling services is a very popular technique people use to make money from a website and is often the reason for them building a blog in the first place. They want to get more clients, to do that they need to get traffic and blogs are great for that!

The easiest way to start selling your services on your blog is to create a new page within WordPress and call it services. Here you can put in the information about what you offer, testimonials and a buy now button.

To collect payments, your best two options is either PayPal or Paystack.

  • High converting, they see your blog and want more!
  • Highly profitable.
  • Easy to deliver.
  • Low refunds.
  • Exchanging time for money.
  • Customers are always right (which we know isn’t true).
  • Can be periods of time where you have no customers!

5. Offer a Membership Site or Premium Content

This technique has become more and more popular over the last few years.

The idea is simply, people come to your website because they want to read your content. They love it and want more. So you offer them even better content, for a price.

Your first step should be to work out what you’re going to offer. Then, you will want to go ahead and create a membership area for them to login and see the information you’re selling.

Once you have set it up, you will want to focus on marketing it. For best results, I recommend focusing on email marketing and adding an advert at the bottom of every page, mentioning that if they liked what they have read so far, they should take a look at your even better paid content.

Another option would be to release an affiliate program for your membership site. This not only will increase sales but will bring you even more traffic.

For billing, checkout pages, upsell pages and affiliate program software, I recommend you use SamCart.

If you want someone else to setup your membership website, you can hire someone to do this on Fiverr.

  • Continuity income, keep making money, month after month.
  • Can be set and forget, if you time release.
  • Affiliates will send you traffic!
  • Can be a huge earner, it accounts for over $90k a month for Tutsplus.

6. Write Tutorials & Promote Something

Another thing I don’t see often, but I love to do!

Content is what everyone is after, that’s why they come to your website, so create content which includes them buying something so that when they do buy, they buy via an affiliate link, and make you money!

What I do to create a tutorial, is I start with the product, find one that you are using and you get a lot out of, it of course needs to have an affiliate program. Then do a tutorial about doing something using that tool.

So for example it could be a post about Photography and take a specific type of photo but you need this lens to do!

  • Makes great content.
  • Good for search engines.
  • Profitable long term.

Quick to produce.

7. Email Marketing

Building a strong mailing list is always a useful asset to any blog as it helps build your readership. You do not have to rely entirely on social media shares and search engine rankings.

People will keep visiting your site long after their first visit, if they sign up for weekly or monthly newsletters. Most sites with a loyal readership have fat email lists.

You can employ email marketing to sell products as an affiliate or you can sell your own products. Either way email marketing is a powerful tool that will build sustainable revenue and traffic for your site.

  • The email list is probably a group of people with very similar characteristics and demographic features which is why they’ve subscribed to your site’s blog. You can certainly expect a better conversion when selling products via emails.
  • Use AWeber, MailChimp, to help build your emailing list.

Using pop ups effectively will increase your subscriber count dramatically in just one or two months.

8. Google Adsense

If you’ve visited any website, you’ve seen Google ads. These ads are everywhere, and for good reason.

Not only are they easy to set up on any basic website, but they can be lucrative once your website starts bringing in a steady amount of traffic.

One of the cool things about Google AdSense is that it’s so easy to get set up. If you have a blog or website, you can sign up for a free Google AdSense Account.

From there, Google will give you a unique code that you will paste onto your website. Google takes it from there, tracking your page views, traffic, and earnings on your behalf.

There is no upkeep or maintenance to get this thing going, which makes it a no-brainer if you have a website already.

9. Consulting

Another way to make money online is via consulting. If you’re an expert in any field, you could potentially find people willing to pay you to counsel them on their personal or business goals.

You might think you’re not important enough to consult for big companies, but you could be surprised at the types of expertise people will pay for.

If you want to start consulting but aren’t sure what steps to take next, you can also set up a free account through Clarity.fm.

This website lets anyone who wants to offer consulting set up a free profile. Once your profile is set up, people will find you and book a session you’ll get paid for.

10. Sponsor Post

The first time I got a sponsored post for Good Financial Cents, I was totally blown away. I think I got paid only $100, but that was a lot of money to me at the time. Later on, however, I realized companies that wanted a sponsored post really just wanted a link from my website to their own site. For that reason, I started increasing my rates.

These days, I charge around more money for a sponsored post. Plus, I clearly mark all sponsored content as an #ad to stay in compliance with Google’s terms and conditions. I also only promote companies I use or believe in.

But, I also know bloggers that get $20,000 for a sponsored post. That’s pretty crazy, but it just goes to show what is possible.

11. Earn Money Online by Flipping Websites

If you don’t know how to build a WordPress website, Yinkis can build a professional website, Sometimes entrepreneurs like to buy already established websites that they can use for their own businesses.

This requires knowing the type of websites in demand, and how to price and sell them. There are websites like Flippa that serve as auction sites and brokers for selling websites.

12. Create a Private Forum

Another option for creating a paid membership site is to create private forums that users must pay to get access to. Forums are a great way for your audience to get one-on-one advice from you.

Other members of the community can also interact and help each other out.

While moderating a forum can be a lot of work, a paid forum is a great way to earn recurring revenue from your website site.

To get started, you’ll need to set up a forum on your site.

13. Create a questions and answers community

Question and answers website

Question and answers communities like Stack Exchange and Quora are huge. They help you build an online community that is driven, motivated, and highly engaged.

Just like forums, you will have to spend some time building a sizable community. After that, you will be able to monetize user-generated content on your website using advertisements, affiliate ads, and other methods.

Popular question and answer websites are able to get direct advertisement and sponsorship deals from advertisers in their industry. This helps them negotiate a much higher rate and extra perks.

14. Sell Online Courses

Selling an online course is another great way to make money online.

Courses usually sell for a much higher price point than ebooks. You can charge a premium for your expertise.

You’ll need to create the lessons for your course, plus any supporting materials that you want to include such as downloads, slides, checklists, templates, etc.

You will also need to decide whether you want to offer personalized support for your course. Some sites offer two tiers of each course: a basic version without support, and a premium version with email support.

Once your course is ready, you can use a learning management system (LMS) plugin to deliver the course to your audience.

For detailed instructions, see our guide on how to sell online courses using LearnDash.

15. Become a Coach

If “consultant” doesn’t feel like the right title for you, you can consider becoming a coach instead.

A life coach offers advice, guidance, and accountability for setting goals and improving one’s life. There are also other kinds of coaches, such as blog coaches, writing coaches, and more.

Whatever your area of expertise is, you can provide one-on-one help to your audience with coaching sessions.

To save time and make things convenient for your clients, you can set up a booking form so readers can schedule coaching sessions right.

16. Create a WooCommerce Dropshipping Store

Dropshipping is another way you can create an ecommerce store on your WordPress website without having to handle inventory or ship items yourself.

With dropshipping, you create the store, manage the website, and customer service. But a dropshipping service will take your orders and ship them out to your customers.

They’re an invisible third party that your customers don’t even know about.

You can use the WooCommerce plugin to create a dropshipping store. There’s also a WooCommerce Dropshipping addon plugin that allows you to automate the process.

17. Create an Amazon Affiliate WordPress Shop

One downside of dropshipping is that you have to find a good supplier, which can be a challenge, and sometimes you have to place a large order up front. This can make it difficult to get started without investing a lot of money.

If you want an easier way to set up an ecommerce site without having to ship products yourself, then you may want to try an Amazon Affiliate shop.

As with many of the items on this list, this works best if you specialize in a niche. If you offer everything, it’s impossible to compete with a big shop like Amazon. But in a small niche, you can differentiate yourself and really stand out.

Conclusion

There are a ridiculous number of ways to make money online and the ones I’ve covered here are just the tip of the iceberg. If you have time, a passion for almost anything, and at least some creative skill, you may be able to build an online income stream  or several if you give it enough time.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to make some extra money, or a full-time living, online. So if you are looking to increase your income, it’s time to try out some of the strategies mentioned above. Good Luck!
